Tomas Svoboda
In the world of contemporary classical music,
Tomas Svoboda is generally considered an "old-world" composer. Though his
musical language is strikingly modernist, and to be sure, in the most sensible
manner, he usually composes works in traditional concert hall settings.
The piano trios display perfectly his brilliant virtuosity in one
of the most traditional of chamber music settings. The performances
are powerful, yet graceful -- filled with subtlety, nuance and drama.
They epitomize the modern Western Classical tradition.
Recipient of an American Record Guide
"Critics' Choice Award" for the year 2001.
"Anyone who believes beautiful music is a thing of the past should listen
to Svoboda's "Passacaglia and Fugue."
-- Sullivan, American Record Guide
"...one of the most compelling American composers working today...sometimes
haunting, sometimes exhilarating...deeply expressive even at the most complex and cerebral."
-- James McQuellen, The Oregonian
"...bridges the gap between tonal and atonal music..."
"...dramatic and often texturally complex."
"...a totally personal and very interesting musical voice."
-- David Denton, Fanfare Magazine
"...a talent to be reckoned with."
-- San Francisco Examiner
"...cleverly constructed and musically arresting. ...(will) appeal to a wide audience."
-- Cleveland Plain Dealer; re: Svoboda's Passacaglia & Fugue, Op. 87 for Violin, Cello & Piano
"...most heartfelt and appropriate... decidedly Coplandesque in its harmonic language,
yet with something original to say as well."
-- New York Times; re: Svoboda's Chorale in E flat (homage to Aaron Copland)
Op. 118 for Piano Quintet
"Ever since we got our first look at some of his music we have been convinced of his
marvelous talent."
-- The Piano Quarterly
"...as talented in playing the piano as he is in writing for it."
-- Los Angeles Times
